Hi,

I am due to start IVF soon. I have never gone through anything like this before. And when the nurse explained things to me, I found it hard to take in. My DH has low count/motility. And is also starting cancer treatment soon. We would like to freeze as many embryos as possible before his treatmentt starts.

The nurse told me that Ganirelix will hopefully stop a natural LH surge that may occur starting O. To stop this surge could give smaller follicles a chance to grow larger. Which may mean more eggs could be produced. It wasn't until I got home after the appt that I realised I had so many questions. Which I have now written down to ask my specialist next week. The problem is I have so many questions. My DH & I have had many tests done on ourselves. Unfortunately I have no idea what the results were. As the specialists sorted everything out for us, I had no need to know what things meant & have not taken in what's been said about that side of things. It's only now that I have to stick myself with these drugs that I find myself now wondering what things mean.

My meds will be:
follistim (300-450iu) & repronex (150-225iu) sc daily probably from day 3-15? (dose/length may change depending on response)
Ganirelix daily from day 6-15?
With daily monitoring & tests

Can anyone please explain to me if this sounds right (I will obviously do exactly as my specialist says) though I would like to know if this is likely to produce a high quantity of eggs & what is the normal protocol for this sort of thing. Is there anyone out there who has used Ganirelix or knows how it works?

Natalie, I did IUI not IVF but I did use something similar to stop me from Oing early but the drug I took was called Anatagon. My 1st Injectibles cycle I did Follistim and O'd on day 10, very early. I got a BFP but m/c, they think because my follies were not really mature enough. So my next IUI cycle I took Antagonm to keep me from Oing early. It worked. I conceived Twins, I lost one in my first trimester and now have my Son. HTH!

You'll be most likely to find a more frequented thread and gals who share in your experience in the "Therapies" Forum. There is a December IVF Thread there for folks like yourself who are sharing in their experiences.

Good luck. I hope that you're able to retrieve and fertilize many eggs and grow a big family despite the challenges that have been set before you.

Thanks for the replies.

I'm sorry for being such a worry wort.

babidius my SIL who recomended this site to me thinks it's the same thing as Antagon but that's the brand name. I'm glad to hear it worked for you.

Will check it out D.

i was on Antagon (Ganrelix - sp?) for both my IVF cycles. it does stop O'ing.
and then after you take that, you take the HSG shot, and then the trigger shot.
it's such an involved process, isn't it? i'll never forget it.
without IVF, my Bella wouldn't be here.
good luck to you!

Sounds to me like you're on the right track! That's pretty close to what I did. I did Bravelle (225 ius) and Menopur (75 ius) Days 1-5. Ganirellex (to stop natural Oing) on days (6-11) The Ganirellex is to make sure none of the mature follies slip out. It is to give the RE the control of what is going on in there. The trigger gives the permission for the eggs to release. Good luck
