Has anyone heard that Guatamala is closing soon? I heard it thru one agency but am not sure if they are using it as a scare tactic to get people to sign up quickly. I dont want to ask in the other adoption sites for fear that I will start a riot. I will research it there though, but if anyone has information please share.

Gussy-
Im not totally sure, but I dont think so. I know of at least two couples that are adopting from Guatamala in the next few months. You think it would be bigger news if that was actually the case. Sorry I dont know more.

I have a friend just starting the adoption process and they were told it was closing. That was one of her 1st choices!

There is something going on with Guatemala adoptions. I am not sure if it is definitely closing, but I know that the regulations will be much stricter. You definitely need to do more research because if it is closing and you start an adoption process, there is no guarantee that you will be placed with your child before it closes. In other words, you can put a lot of emotion and money into a situation only to not bring hme your child so please be careful. I am on a couple of adoption groups on yahoo and the girls there are really really informed. I will see if I can find the answer there for you!

Thanks for checking. I dont want to put a panic into anyone who is in the process by going on those boards as a total stranger. I did read one site that said that the formal ruling is still unknown but they may allow anyone with an I-600 filed before jan to continue. I think the goal is to force all the governements to do like the Chinese system where you apply to the government and you dont deal with individual attornies so the govt can have some control and accountability. In the mean time they will stop lots of families from being formed. Anyone with any insite is sure appreciated!!!

Just wanted to update in case anyone else was looking here for an answer. I got an email from a reputable agency that said that Guat is not closing. The changes to international adoption have not been implemented in US and no plans for it until late 2007 if it is done by then even. God bless the USA and its slowness to activate new laws, it may actually help us to get out baby yet!!! Now if we can just get laws to make insurance pay for IVF!

There was an article in the NY Times 11/5/06 about adoptions in Guatemala by US families. A number of other countries already restrict adoptions from Guatemala and it sounds like the US may be next on the list.

Here is the address for the NY Times article:

Thanks for the update. We just had the last miscarriage that I said would send us down the adoption route. Kind of makes you think if the country is like this, what happens to the kids if there is no way out. I guess that is the niavete that they wrote about. We are undecided between Guatamala and China now. I hate that our domestic system is so screwed up. What is worse paying and indigent 3rd world county mother to place her child that would always be shunned as a 'bastard' or letting a not blood relative like an ex-husband stop an adoption that has had the child placed for almost a year?
