Hello,
Do you record your temps? How long are your cycles usually? Do you know how to check your cervical mucus? We need some more info to be able to help answer your question alittle better.
Grab the book 'Taking charge of your fertility'. It explains all the things Christina mentioned.
If you want touse the ovulation predictor sticks, and having an irregular cycle, I'd jump on ebay and get yourself some cheapies. I used them and they helped me get pregnant 5 out of my 6 pregnancies. Being so cheap, you can test every day and not miss it.

Here are the ones I used with no problem. I'd just get the one line (to show test is working) until my LH surge. Then the 2 lines were faint for a day, then strong for a day, then faint the next... then gone, so I personally think they're great. Just little cardboard strips though - nothing fancy. But they're cheap and they work. There is one listing on the link I posted for 100x test strips for like $42 australian but just double check with them that they post to you. I'm sure they do though.
Oh, also - their pregnancy tests detected my pregnancy at 9dpo.

Hi! I have irregular cycles as well and, let's face it, I was kind of lazy about temping and charting and all that stuff. I bought a clearplan easy fertility monitor. (www.clearplan.com will give you some info on it.) It is pricey to buy it new and the test sticks are pretty pricey to buy each month as well. But ebay does have good prices on both monitors and test sticks. I, personally, thought it was really cool because it gives a digital readout of when you're fertility is low, high, and peak. It took only 2 cycles for me to conceive my son using the monitor. DH and I did not have any other issues to contend with so that was a plus. And beacause the monitor was able to read that I actually ovulated early on one particular cycle, we conceived our son on that cycle. I plan on using it again when we go for TTC #2.
Price wise, you'd probably get a better deal with OPK sticks that Skye suggested. But I just thought I'd throw this out there, too.
Good luck and Baby Dust!
