View Full Version : Bleeding concerns...
I have continued to spot and bleed throughout this pregnancy so far. I am now 14 1/2 weeks, and this morning have started to bleed, yet again. I have been to the doctor repeatedly, and on the last visit (during my last bleeding...last week!) they determined that I have a low lying placenta or placenta previa. They keep telling me that the placenta will probably rise up by week 18 or 20, that this is common in early pregnancy. BUT...I keep bleeding! I call them all the time and they tell me that as long as it's brown blood/old blood that I am okay. Still, I can't help thinking that there can only be so much old blood in there to release. I fear that there is something more dangerous happening to me...internal bleeding, or something. I am trying not to freak out, but I am very concerned since this doesn't seem to be getting any better. Last week, I was bleeding everyday Mon - Fri, it stopped on Sat and is back today (Wed). Any advice?

Baby -
I had a few bouts of bleeding early in my pregnancy. Not as consistent as you, but once in awhile. My doctor said the same thing yours did that if it is old blood and not accompanied by any cramping, etc. Everything is fine. In addition to that, if they are hearing a heartbeat on the baby and you are continuing to grow, the baby is fine.
I understand it can be scary too. The last time I bled, the doctor did tell me about the low lying placenta, he said that although it could cause complications at delivery, it almost always fixes itself before that point. However, at the time of my u/s they said I was fine, but I also haven't had any bleeding either.
Bottom line, I am rambling here. I understand that you are scared. If you are uneasy about your doctor's assessment, maybe you should consider changing doctors. Are you sure that you are following any restriction, etc. that your doctor gave you? My doctor indicated that I was not to excercise, have sex or lift anything after bleeding occured for at least 2 weeks.
It is super scary this pregnancy thing. Especially when it is not going 'textbook', you panicing is natural. But, if you are unsure about your doctor's thoroughness or prognosis, I would get a second opion.

I bled on off during the first two months Im now about 21 weeks . My doctor put me on complete bedrest for the first 2 months the the bleeding stopped and i was
able to resumes activities with limitations not to much walking! He told me that if the bleeding returns regardless of it its accompanied by cramping i would need to remain in bedrestfor the rest of the pregnancy. Maybe my dr. is old fashion I know trendier dr. believe that if a pregnancy is doome there is nothing they or the preg. woman can do. I do what ever my dr. tells me because I know that I would not have my 11yr old son with me today if it wasnt for him. I feel for you it is heart breaking to have a difficult
pregnancy. Maybe you need to find another ob? best wishes, Ill pray for you and your little one
Thanks for the responses...I sincerely and deeply appreciate it!
My doctor has also threatened bed rest, and if the bleeding returns (and is red/new blood), I will be put on bed rest. I was put on a week's bed rest after the first time bleeding, but they haven't done that since...and again, as long as it's old blood, they won't. They only recommendations (or "orders") that they have given me is to be on complete pelvic rest (no sex, no orgasm, no douching). Easy enough...but it hasn't stopped the bleeding. Do you, through your experience, recommend any self-diagnosed orders? Should I stop any other activities? I have a desk job, I don't lift anything other than my 20 lb schnauzer (should I not do that?), I don't exercise at all, but I have taken some small walks (one flat-ground hike and a serious day-long shopping trip and an all-day outdoorsman's event where I stood all day). I'm really interested in your opinion as to whether I am doing too much and if you think I should be slowing down the activity even more. Thanks!

I was also recently diagnosed with placenta previa, but I have had no bleeding at all - and my doctor told me the same pelvic rest...no lifting (so put the dog down!!!!!), no stretching, exercise etc. They also told me any "bright red" bleeding would lead to bed-rest - but to let them know of ANY bleeding.
Only good thing is that dh hired me a cleaning service to clean the house every other week!!!

Okay...totally jealous over the cleaning service! My poor house is a nightmare, but hey, I figure its good representation of my chaotic life right now! ;)
I WILL stop carrying the dog, so thanks for that advice. What led to them diagnosing you with PP? Was it a routine u/s, or did you have other problems? Do you experience any cramping at all? I'm sorry for all of the questions...just seeking comfort. I seem to have mild cramping most of the time. I am 14w, how far along are you?

Hello,
I have not had any problems...it was just a finding at the routine 19 week u/s. I am almost 21 weeks now...and my dr. still says it is likely the placenta will find it's way high enough to not be a problem at all - so at only 14 weeks I would think there is a VERY good chance your plancenta will "shift" upward.
They are sending me for an evaluation with the high risk people (I go on 2/16) but I am not sure if that is more because of the Placenta or because they found something with the dilation of the baby's kidneys called Pyelectasis.
My ob siad the biggest thing about the Placenta Previa is that is makes a c-section necessary if the placenta does not shift away from the cervix...but for me this was meaningless as I was having a schedualed c-section anyway since I had one for my ds and my OB does not do VBAC at all.

I had bleeding everday of my pregnancy from around 7weeks until 6months. Some days I would only have to change the pad a few times. Otherdays I was soaking through the pad and my clothes. I had never been so scared in my life. I was even passing large clots. I was diagnosed with a very large subchorionic hemorrhage.
I was told to drink 2+ liters of water a day, take in foods with extra iron, lay on my left side and not to do any lifting or sex.
Take Care ((HUGS))
