 Hello Ladies I am new to this site and wanted to ask you some questions.Me and DH are considering IVF but I wanted to know if you usually get your BFP at the first attempt.me and DH could only afford to do I IVF and where wondering what are the odds about getting a BFP at the first try.If we do it and it does not work than that is all we can do .We both don't have health insurance because are jobs don't offer them so we are going to pay cash and that why we could not afford another round of IVF .Any suggestions and stories will be helpful.Thank you:o

Hi there. dh & I went thru 2 IVF cycles. we were lucky enough to have insurance coverage, but the total cost for ours was over $17,000 plus $4000 for meds. we paid just $400 for two IVF cycles, so i feel ya. we would never have been able to afford IVF without insurance.
our first cycle failed, but our 2nd cycle worked. we're expecting our daughter in 11 weeks. but i know a lot of people who were successful on their first try. here is the website for my RE. there's a TON of helpful info, maybe some can help you. Good luck! you're in my thoughts! HUGS!

needamiracle- Depending on your age, the success rates are anywhere from 30%-50%. My DH and I are also attempting IVF, one time and one time only due to no fertility coverage. We are paying $14k plus $3,500 for meds. Most clinics have a 'shared risk' program where you pay for 2, but you get 6 tries (3 fresh, and 3 frozen, for my clinc) and if you don't get pregnant during this then you get your money back. We have decided that if it doesn't work the first time, then that's it, otherwise we would probably take advantage of the shared risk program. You can check your clinic's success rates on the CDC website: http://apps.nccd.cdc.gov/ART2003/clinics03.asp

Hope this helps!

Hi there.. NeedAMiracle and Ladies.

We've been TTC for 5+ years now, we live in Canada and Im actually on week 2 of taking my meds for our first IVF. Our Insurance only covers fertility drugs and its a one time cap of cnd$2,500. (my meds came in at $3400) The clinic costs are cnd$5,700, we thought that this wasn't as expensive as what we had been expecting. We had heard stories of it costing $10 - 15K for the procedure alone.

But we have to fly to the Clinic in Calgary for the procedure as we live in Newfoundland. So taking into acount flights, hotels etc, its will end up costing us around $10 - 12Kcnd. We fly out of the 14th Feb and have the IVF around the 22nd.

We're also originally from the UK and I know that back there couples receive their first round of IVF free. I just wish alot more countries would offer this, it would certainly help alot of us.

Good luck to you all and heres hoping.

Wow our medicine this 3rd cycle is around $10k!! We had to pay $25. However, our IVF isn't covered and thats $9850 per complete cycle. We were canceled after the cycle 2 retrieval so we only have to pay $5500 again to get the balance back up to $9850.
I've done 3 cycles and each time my medicine is always around $10k. Must be because I use a lot of gonal f (300 am and pm).

Im from the UK but not all couples get their first IVF free - its a post-code lottery still despite the media. We've spent the equivilent of $7-8k so far.
We finally got our 3rd go free (having done 1 fresh and 1 frozen). Got a BFP from that third go but it was ectopic.

There are no guarantees with IVF. For everyone who gets a BFP first go, there are around 3 others who don't. I don't want to sound negatives but I don't believe in giving false-hope. That said, I do know several people who hit the jackpot first go.

Good luck, whatever you decide.

DH and I got our BFP on the first try, but as the ladies above said it is completely dependent on your situation. Your RE will tell you the likelihood that it will work based on you and your partner's diagnosis specifically. For us, I was 28 and DH 32 when we did it in August. We have male factor infertility (he did 3 sa's all w/low morphology, volume, etc). I already have a DS from prev relationship and my testing came out good which increased the chances of it working for us. We were given a 60%-75% chance of it working on the first try (she said she was leaning toward the higher #, but gave the spread just in case).

As far as costs; we are in CA and paid about $12,500 total (including meds). Our insurance didn't cover a single thing. We did the shared risk program which gave us two fresh cycles if the first one didn't work. You do have to qualify for these programs though so ask, but it might really be worth it if you can afford it that way. At least then you are guaranteed two tries (don't forget to add in the cost of meds if you have to go a 2nd time as you'll have to purchase those at each try- mine were $1850 but I know that's on the low end). There were other options - we could have purchased 3 or 4 tries at an additional discounted cost, so whatever you can afford or makes sense for you.

Also, I assume you've added in the costs to deliver the baby if it works since you don't have medical insurance. I know here it can be extremely expensive!! Have you thought about waiting a little and buying health insurance on your own so those expenses would be covered at least? It shouldn't be too long of a wait if you are both in good health to get decent coverage. I am sure you've gone over it all a million times, but just in case it's something to think about. I wish you the best of luck!!
