View Full Version : Diapers....?

Ok - I'm getting overwhelmed now with all the diaper choices! I started to buy a couple of packs of Swaddlers (newborn) because they seem to be popular - and now some websites are saying because they don't have an elastic backing, that after the first month - things could get very messy with leaking. I did hear that the Swaddlers were the lowest waisted ones though - which was good for the umbilical cord area.
Anyone out there have any good suggestions on what to buy now so I can at least stock up a little bit?
Thanks!!

I'd get a few different brands to start off with, each baby is different and not all diapers work best for all of them. I have some huggies & pampers & luvs and which ever one works best for my lil one is what im gonna use. People get very particular about diapers, while some swear by huggies, others say pampers are the best. just try a couple of different brands, a pack of each i would say. for my DS pampers worked best for him while he was little, now that he's bigger huggies are better for him now. good luck & hope this helps.

Hi Melissa,
I'm a Feb mommy, so this question has practical applications. I agree with Mrs. Lizmc about buying a package of each of a few different brands to see what you like. I do recall that Pampers used to have a newborn diaper with a cutout for the umbilical area. Do they still make that type. I am overseas and don't get that much selection. My babies are born big (more than 9 lbs. normally, with the last one 10 lbs. 14 oz.) so I don't really get to use those newborn size diapers very long. As far as the advice that you got that after the first month the Swaddlers can be a problem because of the lack of elastic in the back, you won't have to worry at that point about the umbilical area because normally it falls off within 10 days - 2 weeks and then it's OK to cover it with the diaper. Up until that time I simply folded it down in the front while making sure to leave the tab clear for securing.
Good luck and belly rubs

Everyone seems to have different opinions of which are best. I have a friend who swears by Huggies Supreme, and I can't stand them. I think some of it has to do with your babies shape and if its a boy or girl. Personally I have used Pampers with DD most of the time. I started out with the swaddlers (loved them), then the Cruisers - they do have elastic waist/backing. I also tried Pampers baby dry, no leaks, but didn't fit DD as well, because they weren't stretchy. Tried Huggies Supreme a couple of different times, left more residue on DD (all diapers do a little if they get too wet) and leaked occasionally. Huggies Baby shaped - hated them, leaked alot. My best advice would be try all of them (within reason) once and decide for yourself. Good luck

I'd have to say Pampers (swaddlers/Cruisers). I agree to try whatever ones you want, but Pampers were best for my girls. I tried the Huggies, and found them to be a bit stiff, and they leaked half the time. I did think that the Huggies Preemies were better than Pampers though. My twins were 5 and a half pounds so I used those for a week or so. They were a bit bigger that the Pampers brand.

Thank you all so much for your responses/advice. I think I will just buy two or three different brands to start out with and decide what's best for my baby's shape/size, etc. I will try the swaddlers first though, since they seem to be the most popular for newborns....
Thanks again ladies!!

I have to put my two cents in also. I have 2 1/2 week old twins. I love the pampers. I tryed the huggies and pampers. But my little boy wets through the huggies. I just think the pampers is more fitting to there little body. Good Luck to you.

Pampers Swaddlers are what they used in the hospital...very soft for newborn skin.--But they only go up to a size 2.
I personally will never buy huggies ever again...because my 4 month old leaked out the side legs with every pee!!! I was SO mad..
The only bad things about the diapers that dont stretch, (Pampers Baby Dry, and LUVS) is when you child is old enough to sit up and move around, it doesnt give their tummies any room--have you ever worn pants really tight in the waist that dont stretch...and you go to sit, or bend down?? --and it feels like your stomach gets cut in half?? LOL--Its whatever works for you, --dont be afraid to try different brands..till ya find what cha like!!

Like some of the other ladies have already said, it's basically a personal choice on what you find you like. I used swaddlers until my baby out grew them. Now I have him in pampers cruisers. I just like Pampers. I had no problems with leaking w/ the swaddlers. The main reason I like them as opposed to others is the side panels that come around the baby are made of a soft material. Some of the others I tried were like tissue paper. I didn't like those.
You'll just have to try a few and see what you like. I know the stuff I got from the hospital after I had the baby had samples of different diapers in them so it was nice to be able to try them out w/ out having to buy a whole package.

my sister used huggies at first then once my nephew was sleeping through the night he was leakin horribly bad...she tried everything then found Luvs. They never leaked and are very cheap.

I also am a firm believer in LUVS :) . I never liked the Pampers they gave me from the hospital, and switched to Huggies as soon as I got home. BUT, as my DD grew, Huggies leaked constantly. I think it is because she is tall and thin. So, I switched to Luvs, and they have not leaked once. And a bonus is that they really are less expensive. I have tried several kinds of store brand diapers as well, and they also leak. Luvs are the BEST!
