What kind of numbers do they like to see for IUI with male factor infertility?? Of course the more, the better but just wondering if docs skipped over IUI with certain numbers. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I am sure someone else can answer your question in more detail, but I wanted to tell you about my IUI experience. I asked the nurse right before what DH's numbers were and she said that they don't count it!! I was disappointed at first, but then decided that was for the best because if I knew I would just worry over it. Anyway, she said they just look at the sample after it is washed. She said "there's good, bad, and ugly, and his sample looked good" so I tried not to worry. Apparently they figured it only takes one! And apparently it worked, as I am now 27 weeks pregnant.

In general though from what I have read, doctors like to see like 10m post wash?? I am really not sure, so I will let someone else answer you accurately!!

Good luck!!

Dear Ummy,
Number wise they look for 3 million postwash as the minimum recommended. This doesn't mean you can't become pregnant on a lesser amount. What they look for in the sample is movement in the postwash. If it wiggles, it is good. They normally go to more sophisticated methods when numbers are extremely low. Basically this means under any circumstance they aren't going to get a million. Most conditions with a male can be improved with time and heavy doses of vitamins/minerals and sometimes herbal extracts. Sometimes it just that he has to BD more to get counts up.

Ok, we got his counts up from between 1-2 million to 30-37 million with vitamins and supplements but his motility is only 10% (which is up, believe it or not, lol). We're still trying more vitamins/supps but just wanted to know for the next step. Wasn't really able to find info on the internet.

Dear Ummy,
Add one gram Vit C to his mix and start looking for calcium supplements. The vitamin C in high amounts helps motility greatly and the sperm ion engines must have calcium. Some people have differculty getting calcium in their systems from dairy even with Vit D. Also add Bananas to his diet as some potassium is also needed. Oh I forgot, the ion engines are what makes the sperm tails work and they work on calcium and potassium ions. Check all his meds even over the counter as a number of meds will totally kill all motility i.e. Tagamet and PepcidAC.

He's already taking a 500mg Vit C + 400IU Vit E tablet (on recommendation from the doc) twice daily and he has some Vitamin C drinks that are 1000mg he started drinking too. He has been on Fertility Blend for the last 6 months and a men's multivitamin but he's sometimey about the multi because they're HUGE. He also just added L-arginine to the mix. Not sure how much he should take but he just took two today, 500mg each.

How much calcium are you talking about? I ask b/c his multivitamin has calcium.

Dear Ummy,
If the multi has Calcium that should be good enough. If he has trouble swallowing the horse tablets get a pill cutter and split them in two taking half in the A.M. and half at night. That keeps the level constant in the blood. I know the pills are a pain as I take enough and the big vits are chokers and the arginine are killers also, but it does work.

lynnecline, it would've been nice to know his numbers! lol Me that is, but I can see you perhaps wanting to know them even though you got pregnant just for future reference perhaps?? I dk. We haven't done any ART procedures yet so I don't know.

Anything else Rich (or anybody else) that might help with his motility?

Ummy,
Try using some Grapeseed extract which is similar to Pycnogenol. It is possible that DH is chewing the E or C vitamins up somehow. Vit C is used to rejuvenate the Vit E. The grapeseed extract will take on any radicals without effecting the C or E in anyway. This could be because of bad air quality in the area you live. Its worth a shot and will improve the product somewhat.

When they say 5 or 10 million motile sperm are they just talking about Class A or do they include Class B as well (the sluggish ones, lol)??

Forgot something . . .

What would cause the majority of the sperm to be dead?? My dh is making more sperm but still, most of them are static.

Ummy,
Try the fish oil. One of the oils in the blend is used to make sperm tails and another the enzymeheads. Now what he is producing are they dead or just not moving. The process of energizing the swimmers is done in the ejaculatory ducts and the longer they are in there the better motility is. This is part of the long arousal on the man process and dramatic improvements in a man's quality is normally found .
